Depth adjustment for shear cut knife holders

DIENES round knife, shown is a pair of knives consisting of upper and lower knife.

Depth adjustment for shear cut knife holders

The overlap depth from top to bottom knife is an important cutting parameter. With regard to the depth adjustment of shear cut knife holders, there are different technical solutions, which differ in their precision, complexity and ease of use.

A precise adjustment of the overlap depth is not only crucial for a controlled cutting process but also directly effects cutting edge quality, the accumulation of cutting dust and tool life. It must also be taken into account that the outer diameter of knives changes with each regrinding cycle.

DIENES offers three technical variants for setting the overlap depth on shear cut knife holders: manual, sensor-based and the fully automatic depth adjustment.

Manual depth adjustment

A manual depth setting is a purely manual setting. This can be optimised by markings, scaling or even a drag ring.

The manual depth setting bears the risk of a scattering of the setting. This can result in fluctuating qualities or even rejects, and the service life of the cutting tools can also vary greatly. Since the scatter depends mainly on the operator’s care, supporting the operator in depth setting is an important goal for us.

Depth adjustment with Senso-Control System

When setting the overlap depth with Senso-Control, the operator is guided to the correct setting by means of a LED display. Reproducibility is drastically simplified, the setting process accelerated and quality sustainably increased.

Fully automatic depth adjustment

With DIENES positioning systems and digitised knife holders, the customer can select fully automatic adjustment of the overlap depth as a function. Fully automatic means that the operator or the system only gives the command to the integrated control with connected sensors to set the knife to a predefined overlap. This function is then carried out fully automatically in an electric motor and pneumatic process without any further action. The fence is adjusted by motor, while the vertical stroke is still pneumatic.
