Guillotine shears
The guillotine shears, also known a plate shears or table shears, are used in particular for processing sheet metal and steel, plastic sheets or cardboard boxes. They can be motor-driven or still manually operated by the machine operator. In this case, one fixed and one movable knive are used. Between them, the material is sheared with a straight edge.

Mode of operation
Guillotine shears can be operated manually, as well as by motor. While in a so-called hand lever shear the cut is made by the machine operator pressing the lever, a motorized guillotine shear uses a flywheel, whose mass ensures that the motor power can be kept as low as possible.
Guillotine shears enable not only long but also very straight cuts. Usually, the cutting length is about two meters, but up to 15 meters are possible. The thickness of the material that can be cut depends on the design of the machine. From very thin materials up to a thickness of 200mm can be cut here.
The material to be cut lies on a straight support during the cutting process and is held in the correct position by a hold-down device. The lower knife is mounted at the level of the base, while the upper knife either moves straight down onto the material web or is guided in a circular path.
The quality of the cut depends largely on the size of the cutting gap between the lower and upper knives. The smaller the gap, the better the cut, but at the same time the load on the cutting tools.
