Calenders are versatile. They are used in the textile, paper and plastics industries. They are also used in screen printing processes.

Calendering.
In calendering, the material to be processed is passed through heated rolls arranged one on top of the other. The rolls, which are made of steel or chilled cast iron, shape the material into the desired form. There are both fusion calenders, which are used to produce films, and coating calenders, which can be used to coat conveyor belts, for example. In theory, only the forming of a material is sometimes referred to as calendering, but in practice this is different.
Calenders are used both for smoothing, compacting, embossing and calendering materials. In the textile industry, for example, calenders are used to smooth surfaces, remove excess liquor or heat set. In the paper industry, calenders are used in particular to improve the surface or reduce the paper thickness. The plastics industry uses calendering in particular to produce thicker films, such as for transparent packaging. Furthermore, calenders are also used in the screen printing process. As in the paper industry, this mostly involves smoothing the surface of steel gauze fabric and reducing the material thickness. The more steel gauze fabric is calendered, the more similar its appearance becomes to that of a metal foil.
